PeopleSoft 9.2 – The Last Upgrade

People working in PeopleSoft technology must be aware of upgrades and the amount of planning and hard work which is required for a successful upgrade. Customers worry a lot about customizations and integrations in their source version and also the cost (Hardware/Software/Consulting) which they have to incur in an upgrade project.

With PeopleSoft 9.2 version we have a solution to this problem and as per Oracle PeopleSoft 9.2 will be your last upgrade as there will no 9.3. Does it mean an end to a PeopleSoft application?

Well the answer to this question is “NO”; there will be no end to PeopleSoft product in fact with these new changes customers will get new functionality about 2 to 3 times a year. Once you’re on 9.2 you can get this functionality without upgrading ever. This is possible because of PUM (PeopleSoft Update Manager) delivered with 9.2 application.

Before version 9.2, Oracle delivered a new PSFT release; offering tax updates, minor product enhancements and fixing bugs using software bundles delivered every 10 – 12 weeks. During the same time, PeopleSoft developers were working on a NEW release and thus working on two code lines. For a major product enhancement customers had to wait years and often years more for the average customer to perform an expensive application upgrade. The constant risk and confusion which version I should go for? How long it will be supported or should I wait for another version?

The PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) offered with release 9.2 allows the ability to deliver a package of changes that are selective by customer. All changes through the lifetime of the release are offered but the customer chooses what they want based upon their business needs. They package it themselves. They create a personalized bundle that includes only what they need. The cost savings are huge and customers take what they want, when they want it minimizing the size and expense of an upgrade. This result in a quick time to market for enhancements and quicker update time by customers once the enhancements are available.

As per Paco Aubrejuan (Senior Vice President  PeopleSoft Development) PeopleSoft Update Manager is a game changer.

“Once the customer gets onto 9.2 they don’t necessarily need to worry about an upgrade. They can maintain the system at a much lower cost and all the new functionality that we are coming out with over the next several year’s…they can take without doing an upgrade. They can take the pieces that they want when they want to take them and retain the customizations that they have. That is a game changer for customers who used to get on a release and then get no new functionality until they upgraded to the next release. Now they get to take down new functionality as they go, in a much easier way and much lower cost way.”

So now what is the call of action for the customers? Get your PeopleSoft upgraded to 9.2 and don’t wait for 9.3 because the high probability is there will be no 9.3.
